Retina microsurgery – PPV
Outpatient retinal and vitreous surgery uses excellent experience with a surgical technique called PPV (pars plana vitrectomy).
The method has been checked by millions of patients with serious and less serious retinal and vitreous diseases.
In the case of PPV, the doctor enters micro-holes in the sclera with thin instruments. S/he then performs delicate retinal and vitreous preparations, resections and coagulations inside the eye using a microscope.
In some cases, vitreous humour is quite removed and replaced with silicon oil or gas (so-called internal tamponade).
An alternative to retina surgery is generally observation of the patient. In some cases, it is also eye laser treatment or intraocular injections of Avastin.
