PTK – phototerapeutic keratectomy

Mechanical damage to the corneal surface called epithelium can result in repeated severe pain of the eye that usually disappears in a few hours but comes back at any time, unexpectedly.

The condition is called recurrent erosion (RE) by doctors. The basis of the disease is defective adhesion of epithelial cells to the corneal surface. The cells can easily and spontaneously get loose, thus uncovering sensitive nerve endings that are painfully irritated with eyelid movements.
Besides mechanical damage, recurrent erosion can be the result of inflammation or other eye diseases.

Treatment with drops and bandages is not successful. If the condition occurs repeatedly, there is a risk of infectious complications and further deterioration.

PTK treats the recurent erosion permanently. In the case of the method, the eye surface is treated with a laser beam that restores the smooth surface of the eye, thus allowing to restore the epithelium all over the cornea.

The surgery is not covered by health insurance companies. The price of the surgery is CZK 5 000.
