You questions

  • What am I allowed and not allowed to do after the non-laser surgery (ICL, RLE, PRELEX)?

Don´t schedule any other activities on the day of surgery.
Eye surgery is not an ordinary experience. Take account of the fact that after the surgery you will feel like after an important examination - you will experience a mixture of euphoria, relief and great exhaustion.
It is best to fall asleep for 2 to 3 hours after you return home. One or two beers or a glass of something stronger will not do any harm in this case. Note! Do not OVERDO it with alcohol and do not COMBINE alcohol with painkillers and sleeping pills!
You don´t need to lie for the whole day. Resting at home as usual is enough. There is no reason to avoid bending and doing up your shoelaces. You cannot be hurt by carrying normal-weight things either. However, don´t do exercises and sports on the day of surgery.
Protect the eye from injury - don´t hold small children in your lap, turn on the lights if you go to the bathroom at night.
Keep the bandage on until you see the doctor on the first post-operative day.
If the eye operated on does not hurt or burn, it is possible to watch TV on the day of surgery.

  • What drops will I use?

You will apply TOBRADEX drops in the post-operative period; these drops are a combination of an antibiotic and a anti-inflammatory preparation.

  • Will my eye be bandaged after the surgery?

Yes, it will. Keep the bandage on until you see the doctor on the first post-operative day.

  • Can I smoke and drink alcohol?

If you are a heavy smoker, it is probably useless to talk you out of a cigarette.
Reasonable amount of alcohol is not harmful for the eye. If you drink one or two beers after you come home on the day of surgery and then you fall asleep for 2 to 3 hours, it is perhaps the best you can do for your eyes. Shhh - don´t say it to anyone - some sworn enemies of alcohol might be angry with us because of the advice.
Note - never combine alcohol with painkillers or sleeping pills.

  • When do I have to come to see the doctor?

The first postoperative examination is right on the second day after the surgery (i.e. the first post-operative day).
Next postoperative examinations are after a week and then in 3 to 6 weeks after the surgery, depending on the condition of the eye,.

  • How long shall I be on sick leave?

In the case of office work, we recommend 1 to 3 days of sick leave.
In the case of hard work and work in a polluted environment, we recommend 2 to 5 weeks of sick leave.
You are entitled to be given a sick leave certificate and to receive sick pay although you pay the surgery yourself. If you like to, we will be glad to issue the sick leave certificate for you.

  • How long should I avoid using computer and watching TV?

Using computer and watching TV cannot be harmful for you after the surgery.
A lot of patients watch TV in the evening of the day of surgery. If the eye does not burn or tear, there is no reason to avoid it.
If it feels like tears or burning in your eye on the first day after the surgery, it is better to keep the eyes shut and leave out both TV and computer.
There is no reason to avoid TV or computer on the other days. However, take account of the fact that there may be certain variation in visual acuity. Absolute majority of people is able to perform ordinary office work since the 3rd post-operative day, though.

  • When can I travel by plane?

Anytime. Laser surgery does not reduce the ability to travel as a plane passenger. If it is necessary, you can theoretically do so immediately after the surgery.

  • When can I start to drive a car?

In terms of the function of seeing, most patients are able to drive in 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery. Please, wait with driving until the other of your eyes is operated on, too.

It may be different in terms of law, though.
It depends on whether you have the note "glasses required for driving" in your driving licence, or not, and on whether you are an amateur driver or professional.
The record "glasses required" can only be erased by the competent transport department of the municipality, exclusively under the direction of the general practitioner. These authorities do not recognize findings by an eye doctor.
If you are an amateur driver, there is no record in your driving licence and you comply with the conditions of seeing specified by the relevant regulation and you do not have to take any other administrative steps.
If you are a professional driver, the regulations relating to you may be more complicated. Please consult your employer or general practitioner or staff doctor what to do in order not to neglect anything.

  • How long after the surgery can I go on holiday to the sea?

We will be more relaxed if you do not bathe in swimming pools, seawater and natural freshwater for 5 weeks after non-laser surgery.
Schedule the surgery with us so that it is no problem.
Should it contravene your plans in the form of holiday already paid for, we would probably agree with departure in three weeks after the surgery.
But please promise to us that you will protect your eyes with sunglasses, strictly observe hygiene and ensure that neither seawater nor swimming pool water gets in your eyes.

  • How long after the surgery can I go skiing?

Those who never fall, can go skiing in 4 weeks after the non-laser surgery).
The rest of us can go only in 6 weeks and we will use ski glasses.

  • How will seeing develop after the surgery?

After the bandage is removed on the first day of surgery, the seeing might be blurred and a bit like under water.
It is going to clear out already during the first day.
It will further improve during cca 14 days after the surgery. There may be certain variation in the quality of vision during the day.
There may be a feeling of slightly blurred vision in the peripheral visual field towards the temple for 6 weeks after the surgery.
With respect to the great dioptric difference, the seeing may be uncomfortable in the period between the surgery of the first eye and the surgery of the other one.

  • What is Nd_YAG laser?

Nd_YAG laser is device used to treat the iris before the intraocular contact lens is implanted. It is also used for so-called capsulotomy during which transparency of optical media of the eye is restored following so-called secondary cataract.

  • In what time is the other eye operated on?

In the case of ICL, RLE and PRELEX, the other eye is usually operated on in 1 to 2 weeks after the first surgery.
If you have a really important reason for that and the condition of your eyes is not an obstacle, we can imagine to treat both of your eyes with non-laser surgery on the same day in exceptional and justified cases.
In the case of laser surgery, we treat both eyes at once in 99% of cases.

Even though I've been involved with multifocal intraocular lenses for over 20 years, it is amazing what I've been able to learn in the past three weeks from my own experience with having multifocal lenses in my eyes. (PRELEX with Alcon Acrysof  Restor Multifocal lens)
