After laser surgery

• What I can and can´t do on the day of surgery?

  Don´t schedule any other activities on the day of surgery.

  Eye surgery is not an ordinary experience. Take account of the fact that after the surgery you will feel like after an important examination - you will experience a mixture of euphoria, relief and great exhaustion.

  It is best to fall asleep for 2 to 3 hours after you return home. One or two beers or a glass of something stronger will not do any harm in this case. Note! Do not OVERDO it with alcohol and do not COMBINE alcohol with painkillers and sleeping pills!

  Concentrate on 2 things that are important: 1) Do not touch your eye - do not rub it. 2) Use the eye drops regularly according to the schedule you received after the surgery. Note! If you are asleep, do not let yourself be woken up because of the drops. Sleeping with your eyes closed is more important for the eye than the drops on the first day.

  If you do not have any problems, there is no reason for avoiding TV or computer.

• What drops will I take – how long?

  You will use TOBRADEX drops for a week; these drops are a combination of an antibiotic and a anti-inflammatory preparation. If you are not asleep, please apply the drops into each eye operated on every 3 hours. When you are asleep, do not let yourself be woken up because of the drops. Restful sleep is more important for the healing process than the drops.

  Start to apply so-called "artificial tears" since after the second post-operative day. They help keep the eye surface in an optimum condition. The frequency and duration of the application of artificial tears as well as the specific product may differ in each of the patients. The doctor will inform you in time of how to use artificial tears.

• Will my eyes be bandaged after the surgery?

  No, they won´t. It is not necessary to use a bandage or a plaster over the eye after laser surgery.

• Can I smoke and drink alcohol?

  If you are a heavy smoker, you won´t probably give up a cigarette after the surgery. Take account of the fact that in the first hours after the surgery smoke from cigarettes may cause your eyes to tear and burn.

  Reasonable amount of alcohol is not harmful for the eye. If you drink one or two beers after you come home on the day of surgery and then you fall asleep for 2 to 3 hours, it is perhaps the best you can do for your eyes. Shhh - don´t say it to anyone - some sworn enemies of alcohol might be angry with us because of the advice.

  Note - never combine alcohol with painkillers or sleeping pills.

• When shall I come for postoperative examinations?

  In the case of NeoLASIK HD, NeoLASIK and LASIK surgery, the postoperative examination is on the 1st day after the surgery. Then in 2 or 3 months and in 6 months after the surgery.

  The healing process is longer and more complicated in the case of PRK - therefore, you should see the doctor more often. The first examination is only on the 4 day after the surgery and in 3 and 6 weeks after the surgery. Then you should see the doctor in 3, 6 and 12 months.

   

• How long I have te be out of work (on sick leave)?

  In the case of office work, 1 to 3 days of sick leave are usually enough.

  In the case of hard work and work in a polluted environment, we recommend 10 days of sick leave.

  You are entitled to be given a sick leave certificate and to receive sick pay although you pay the surgery yourself. If you like to, we will be glad to issue the sick leave certificate for you.

• How long should I avoid using computer and watching TV?

  Using computer and watching TV cannot be harmful for you after the surgery.
  A lot of patients watch TV in the evening of the day of surgery. If the eye does not burn or tear, there is no reason to avoid it.
  If it feels like tears or burning in your eye on the first day after the surgery, it is better to keep the eyes shut and leave out both TV and computer.
  There is no reason to avoid TV or computer on the other days. However, take account of the fact that there may be certain variation in visual acuity. Absolute majority of people is able to perform ordinary office work since the 3rd post-operative day, though.
  Note: In the case of the economic PRK surgery, post-operative difficulties do not mostly allow for watching TV and working with computer for 4 or more days after the surgery.

• Can I come for postoperative examinations in abroad or in another town?

  Yes, you can, in some cases. However, in the case of the 1st and 7th day after the surgery, we prefer you to see the doctor in NeoVize.

  If you live in a civilized foreign country and would like to see a doctor in there in the case of some of the later examinations, please consult us. We mostly find a solution.

• When can I travel by plane?

  Anytime. Laser surgery does not reduce the ability to travel as a plane passenger. If it is necessary, you can theoretically do so immediately after the surgery.

• When can I start to drive a car?

  In terms of the function of seeing, most patients are able to drive on the 3rd to 7th day after the surgery.

  It may be different in terms of law, though.

  It depends on whether you have the note "glasses required for driving" in your driving licence, or not, and on whether you are an amateur driver or professional.

  The record "glasses required" can only be erased by the competent transport department in the place of your permanent residence, exclusively under the direction of the general practitioner. These authorities do not recognize findings by an eye doctor. Glasses data are not generally recorded in new driving licences in credit card format.

  If you are an amateur driver, there is no record in your driving licence and you comply with the conditions of seeing specified by the relevant regulation and you do not have to take any other administrative steps.

  If you are a professional driver, the regulations relating to you may be more complicated. Please consult your employer or general practitioner or staff doctor what to do in order not to neglect anything.

• How long after the surgery can I go on holiday at the see?

  We will be more relaxed if you do not bathe in swimming pools, seawater and natural freshwater for 4 weeks.

  Schedule the surgery with us so that it is no problem.

  Should it contravene your plans in the form of holiday already paid for, we would probably agree with departure after the second postoperative examination (it is generally on the 7th day after the surgery).
  But please promise to us that you will protect your eyes with sunglasses, strictly observe hygiene and ensure that neither seawater nor swimming pool water gets in your eyes.

• How long after the surgery can I go skiing?

  Those who never fall, can go skiing in a week (after the second postoperative examination).
  The rest of us can go only in three weeks and we will use ski glasses.

• How will seeing develop after the surgery?

  Most patients with a higher number of diopters will notice the result already in the operating theatre.

  It is normal to be amazed and surprised by the immediate effect. However, the seeing is a bit like "under water" during the first hours.

  Visual acuity gradually improves on the day of surgery. The seeing is "on 80 %" on the first day after the surgery. It is "on 90%" after the first week and it gradually improves to the 100% effect of the surgery in other weeks.

• Shall I avoid going outside after the surgery when the weather is windy and chilly?

  No, you don´t have to. Neither wind nor frost will damage your eye.
  Please take account of the fact that cold air and frost may cause your eyes to tear and burn.

• Can diopters return?

  In part of short-sighted patients, the back of the eye continues to bulge out over life. This may cause another progression of the disorder in the years after the surgery.
  The younger the patient and the more serious the disorder, the more probable progression is in the following years.
